My cousin rachel 1952 book7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() Set in the early 1800s, Philip Ashley, a man who was orphaned at an early age, (Richard Burton) is raised by his older cousin, Ambrose. What makes this a masterpiece is the way it will forever keep you guessing. An impressive score by Franz Waxman, along with the magnificent suspense and performances, made this one of the most entertaining and depressing films I've ever seen. It's an exquisitely made film, with both beautiful and brooding cinematography that perfectly illustrates the story. Stars: Olivia de Havilland, Richard Burton, Audrey Dalton, Ronald Squire, George Dolenz, John SuttonĭID SHE OR DIDN'T SHE? - My Cousin Rachel is one of the darkest and most mysterious films I've ever had the pleasure to watch, making it one of my all time favourite movies. It boasts what is arguably the greatest performance ever by Olivia de Havilland, and the role that secured Richard Burton's rise to fame. Writers: Daphne Du Maurier (Novel), Nunnally Johnson ![]()

The black swan second edition7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() We concentrate on things we already know and time and time again fail to take into consideration what we don’t know. Why do we not acknowledge the phenomenon of black swans until after they occur? Part of the answer, according to Taleb, is that humans are hardwired to learn specifics when they should be focused on generalities. For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan so was 9/11. A black swan is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpredictable it carries a massive impact and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. ![]()

A face like glass7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() How did we get this book: We both bought our copies ![]() And that makes her very dangerous indeed. For Neverfell’s emotions are as obvious on her face as those of the most skilled Facesmiths, though entirely genuine. Into this dark and distrustful world comes Neverfell, a little girl with no memory of her past and a face so terrifying to those around her that she must wear a mask at all times. ![]() Expressions must be learned, and only the famous Facesmiths can teach a person to show (or fake) joy, despair or fear – at a price. The people of Caverna are more ordinary, but for one thing: their faces are as blank as untouched snow. In the underground city of Caverna the world’s most skilled craftsmen toil in the darkness to create delicacies beyond compare – wines that can remove memories, cheeses that can make you hallucinate and perfumes that convince you to trust the wearer, even as they slit your throat. In Caverna, lies are an art – and everyone’s an artist. ![]()

![]() What crystal forms will depend on which elements are present and the conditions of the environment at that time and place. As they pass through the less active and much cooler layers of the earth the elements fall out of solution and start to crystallise in any crevice they can find. All of this gets other elements and compounds thrown at it such as sodium, iron, water and oxygen. Hot liquids and gases from below the earth force their way up towards the surface bringing with them molten rock which is called magma. Stresses can fracture the layers, and this is where crystals can form. What we see as the end product has actually taken millions of years to create.Įarth is made from layers which are continuously moving, not so we would notice though, well not all the time. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From the sand between our toes on the beach to huge marble statues and concrete buildings and of course all the semi-precious and precious stones in between.Īll of these come from the earth, they are collected from rivers and sea shores and mined from hills, caves and mountains. ‘Crystals’ is a blanket title that covers all sorts of stones, minerals and metals and they can be found all around us. John steinbeck east of eden review7/4/2023 ![]() ![]() Written in 1952, East of Eden is considered one of John Steinbeck’s best works. It was a surprise, even to me, that I enjoyed it so much. I tried reading bit by bit over two months to lessen the pressure of finishing the novel. ![]() Perhaps it was some divine intervention for me to read it. I was surprised to see the copy of the book in the video because it was the same copy we had at home. I first stumbled upon East of Eden in Uncarley’s video about Emma Chamberlain’s new favorite book. East of Eden is one of John Steinbeck’s best works. Such is the case of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. However, it is important to read classic literature, be it local or foreign books, because they teach us more than what the world looked like in their time. I also find it hard to concentrate reading them which frustrates me. The length of the books would take me months to finish them. Every time, I needed to write a comparative analysis or a comprehensive report on whatever classic novel my teachers decided on, my love for reading would suddenly dissipate into smoke. In school, we all experienced having a requirement of reading for book reports. ![]()

George romero between night and dawn7/4/2023 ![]() Picture: Arrow undertook its own restorations of the three films for this set. Hacked about by its distributors and released in various different cuts, the film was even marketed as a softcore exploitation flick called Hungry Wives.ġ973's The Crazies is another of Romero's brutal (and blackly comic) allegories concerning societal breakdown – this time caused by the accidental release of a military bio-weapon – and is both an entertaining film in its own right and a trial run for several of the ideas and themes he would end up refining in Dawn of the Dead. ![]() More interesting still is 1973's Season of the Witch, a mini-masterpiece of suburban witchcraft with a strong feminist subtext. ![]() Notable as one of only two films that he directed and didn't write, 1971 counterculture comedy There's Always Vanilla doesn't quite hold together, but is still far from being the 'total mess' Romero later deemed it to be. This revealing set houses three of the four films Romero shot between his 1968 debut Night of the Living Dead and its 1978 follow-up Dawn of the Dead (1978's Martin sadly remains MIA on Blu-ray). ![]() ![]() Romero will always be remembered as the 'father of the zombie film', his 40-year career as a filmmaker understandably dealt with more than just the undead. While the huge influence his Night of the Living Dead/ Dawn of the Dead/ Day of the Dead trilogy had on horror cinema ensures that the late George A. ![]()
